When, Where, & How:  Cancer Discovery

  • The disease of cancer can be traced back to Egypt about 1500 B.C. in mummies. According to inscriptions, surface tumors were surgically removed in a similar way they are removed today.

  • For 1,400 years in Ancient Greece, many believed Hippocrates in his theory that an excess of black bile caused cancer. In Ancient Egypt

What is immunotherapy?

  • Immunotherapy is the use of therapeutic antibodies, molecules, or vaccines as a drug to activate a person's immunity.

  • Antibodies circulate throughout the body until they find and attach to antigens. Other parts in the immune system can destroy cells containing antigens.

  • Laboratory produced molecules called Monoclonal antibodies are made to mimick.

  • Immunotherapy can be done on its own or with other cancer treatments.

Immunotherapy Explained

How does it work?

  • Antibodies in the immune system find and attach themselves to antigens. They will then alert other disease-fighting cells.

  • Immune system is stimulated to work harder to attack cancer cells (foreign invaders) or giving the body man-made immune system proteins.

  • Researchers came up with different types of immunotherapy which are: monoclonal antibodies, immune checkpoint inhibitors, cancer vaccines, and other non-specific immunotherapies.

  • In some instances, the treatment may not be effective due to the patient's age, health, and type of cancer.

Why is it effective?

  • New studies has found immunotherapy to me more effective than chemotherapy.

  • Shown to have effectiveness in a wider population of people.

  • Patients with low level of PD-L1 in their tumors showed effectiveness towards immunotherapy.

  • Contains fewer side effects for the patient.

  • Help patient stay cancer free for a longer period of time.

  • Responds better to cancers that can't handle radiation or chemotherapy.
